Research 2: Netsky - Iron Heart (Video 1)

This is the first music video that I am going to look at. It is called 'Iron Heart' by Netsky. I chose to look at this video because of the effects that have been added at relevant points and how the video is completely in sync with the video you are seeing as a viewer and listener. For me, this makes it more of and experience than other music videos which are less joined to the music itself and are connected more to the storyline. The music tells its own story without the need for lyrics.

I will now talk about various screen grabs of the video, talking about the reason for the shot and what it represents:

This first screen grab was probably shot in focus, and a Gaussian blur had been added after. The main reason for this shot was to set the scene, just from this you can get the genre of the entire song. It is night time, in an urban area, high population because there is a bus, empty streets. The genre for this song is sort of drum and bass/soft techno/electronic and fits the night time city scene very well. The blur was put in purely to spread the light, its obviously no important about the text on the top of the bus, and the widened headlights of the bus provide a soft point of interest.
The reason for taking this screen grab was purely because of the type of shot it is. It'a high angle shot, slowly panning right, most probably taken from a camera crane on top of a building. This 'time-lapse' shot shows all of the lights of cars passing through all blurred and streaky due to the motion blur produced by the high speed of the shot. If suitable, it would be nice to add a technical shot like this one to my final video as it is the technicality of a shot that interests me the most.
The first shot we get of the main actor in the music video, evidently on the bus we saw in the first locational shot. This shows the bus pretty much empty (the other people on the bus we doubt he knows), adding to the feel the song is trying to portray to its audience. A wide angle lens would have been used here as buses are not the easiest of objects to capture from the inside, so in order to get both sides of the bus into the shot, a low mm, wide angle lens would have been used here. A relatively high ISO would also have been used in this shot.
The shot following the previous shows the same actor, but from a low angle, not to portray any kind of power, but it adds an interesting factor to the shot by the fact that it is a low angle shot, and that the camera angle does not seem to be fixed on any specific line or object, however it is obvious that the male in this shot is the point of interest and the audience should be asking themselves questions such as 'why are we watching him?' and 'what's he got to do with the video?'.
The final screen grab that I took was entirely because of the added visual effect. The editors have produced a 'match on audio action' where a wavy rise in pitch in the song is reflected by the lights glowing brighter as the noise wavers. This was done by adding lens flares, and adjusting colour settings such as exposure, contrast and brightness settings, to give the impression that whatever the man is running up the steps for has something to do with the lights flashing with the music, i.e. how his world is being effected by the sound that we are hearing, and it is up to us to figure out why that is.
