Research 9: Adele - Rolling In The Deep (Video 7)

From Adele's latest album '21', rolling in the deep is one of her most successful songs fro the album and has the music video to go with it.

This is one of the opening shots. nothing moves in these shots, but some nice  effects have been created. I chose to use this screen shot as it is the best example of the effects they are creating. Making a silhouette out of a still figure by placing a bright light at the back of the room. There is a lot of haze created by this light. The way it has been made greyscale helps to make effect even more prominent.
This is a great shot, really made by the silhouette produced by the lights above the figure. The shot is greyscale, and makes things a little harder to pick out if they are not instantly recognisable. This also adds to the silhouette effect. I think the most striking thing about this video is the location, I can't understand why there would be a room with a pile of what seems to be sand on the floor, and industrial plastic curtains around the side. This is obviously a set, but really adds to the theme of the video.
'Crystal clear' are the words sung as we cut to this shot. We are not sure yet, what all these cups of water have to do with the video, but the fact that the water is clear links the words being sung, to what we are seeing on screen.
Most of the shots in this video do seem to be quite random, but we find out later in the video, why they are really there, because they usually have more meaning to them, if not to just add an effect.
This shot was taken on a dolly, where the camera is moving towards the singer. This keeps the room as wide as possible with the lens they are using, and makes the subject in the middle look smaller than she may be. The whole shot was captured in-focus, meaning that the audience will take mental note of the strange mise en scene of the room, how there is an empty chair facing the other direction. This shows that by not using techniques such as depth of field, it can be just as effective when trying to visualise the genre.
This is a clever shot, as the ripples caused by the drum beating (soo hard to stop the video at the right point by the way!!), give a deeper meaning to the lyrics that were used earlier in the song. It is also a wonder as to how they got absolutely no camera shake/wobble from the drum beating, as this is the reason for all of the glasses shaking as they are. Getting shots like this is a sure way of getting marks, but to think about, plan and then execute the shot will be a huge challenge.
