Research 12: Maroon 5 - Moves Like Jagger (Video 10)

This is a very recent video made by Maroon 5, the opening of the video sets the scene. Using footage from when Mick Jagger was performing on stage. They use this theme for the majority of the video, where old film grain styling has been added to create the effect of this being set a good few years back. The only thing stopping us from thinking this video could have been shot a while ago is the fact that there are very modern, abstract texts that keep appearing. This video has a very unique style and works well.

Part of the intro to the video, everything up until this point has been black and white, made to look old footage (some of it genuine), including an actual interview with Mick Jagger. Here we see the abstract text, setting the scene, and the year, which goes against everything we have just seen as we realise that it is all in fact very up to date. Depending on the genre of the song, this could be an avenue worth exploring.
As the music start up, we cut to the stage with just the 'Jagger' on the back curtain, then the big 'M' and 'Moves Like Jagger' appear to introduce the artist and the title of the song. This continues the abstract theme vs the old black and white theme that is used.
I thought that I would include this shot just to prove a point. In almost every video where there isn't really a story line as such, but is focussed more on the music, we always get at least one shot of the strumming of a guitar. This is proving to be an essential shot for a music video, provided you choose to shoot it in this style. It works with a storyline as well, so no excuses!
Here we see a drum being hit in time with the music, as the drum beat comes in. For me this adds a big emphasis on the beat of the song, and gives the viewer a more emotional attachment to what they are listening to. Getting both the visual and audio of a sound there is a greater connection made between the song and the listener.
For my final screen grab I thought I'd show that not all of the shots used are 'old' looking. This shot is used multiple times, normally in quick editing. It shows the singer on stage, with the big 'M' behind him, all in colour with no film grain effects. A lot of the music video is actually shot in this way, where we are looking at somebody on stage, in full colour, but with specific lighting.
